Robbie and I were sitting on the curb in front of his house. I took off my sunglasses and put them in my jacket pocket. The orange and pink layers in the sky were slowly giving way to the dark blue and purple layers as the sun set further and further below the horizon. I pulled out my little transistor radio and turned it on. The static crackled as I extended the antenna. I adjusted the dial until Jack Buckâs baritone voice came through loud and clear.
âWhatâs the score?â Robbie asked me.
âItâs 2-0 Sox. Top of the second. Marty Barrett just singled in a run,â I said.
âUnbelievable,â he said shaking his head, âThey might actually win this thing.â
I nodded. âClemens hasnât given up a hit yet, but itâs early.â
Robbie stood up. âSpeaking of early, where is that guy? Heâs late!â He folded his hands on top of his head.
âWill you relax?â I said. âJosh said heâd be here. Just chill a sec.â
âSo howâs his car anyway?â Robbie asked. âHe wanted me to meet you guys at your house this morning but its Saturday and I ainât getting up that early for anything.â
âItâs⦠pretty cool,â I said. âIt looks like crap on the outside, but his system bumps. Weâll probably hear it as he drives up.â
Robbie nodded and looked behind me. âI think thatâs him.â
I turned around and couldnât believe what I was seeing. Instead of the rumbling multi-colored monstrosity that I expected to see, Josh rolled up to us in a sleek, blood red car with an engine that was purring like a kitten instead of roaring like a lion.
âWhatâs up boys?â Josh said with his arm dangling out the window. He pulled up beside us and revved the engine. The lionâs roar was still there. âReady to go?â
âHoly crap!â Robbie said. âThis is your car?â
âYup,â Josh said. âJust made some minor repairs and got it painted a few hours ago.â
I couldnât believe it. It didnât even seem like the same car from this morning. It went from looking like it had just come off the scrap heap to looking like it belonged on the showroom floor. It had shiny chrome rims with a thin black outline for tires. The disaster of a paint job was transformed into a gleaming red shell all around the body. The hood was so clean I could see the reflection of the amber skies above us.
âWhatâd you do?â I asked. âYou ditch the car from this morning and steal this one?â
âItâs amazing what a new paint job and catalytic converter will do.â Josh said as he popped open the car doors.
âShotgun,â I said turning toward Robbie.
We piled into Joshâs car and he revved the engine. The car was even more pristine on the inside. There wasnât a speck of dust anywhere. The floor mats had nice straight lines across them, like the carpets at home after Mom vacuums. Every inch of the granite-black interior shone like onyx. The passenger seat was so slick, I nearly slipped off of it as I sat down.
